Black River Gorges National Park

Containing well over 16,000 acres this park enables visitors to witness the rapidly disappearing natural scenery of the island and its unique endemic plant and bird life. It’s a particularly excellent venue for bird watching from the boardwalk’s access to the dwarf forest. Protected since 1994 this fenced forest and heath are part of the nation’s growing and successful conservation efforts. Visitors can walk the 4 mile roundtrip route to view the Macchabee Forest or the most ambition, but highly rewarding, 9 mile roundtrip through the Gorges to the Black River. There are a number of longer walking trails including one to the Black River Peak, at over 2,700 feet, the nation’s highest point. The Park is reached easily from Vacoas of Curepipe via La Marie and Mare aus Vacoas. An information center with picnic area is being developed at Le Petrin.
