The Currency of the Republic of Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiya (MRf) which has denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500, all of which are paper notes except MRf 1, which is a round coin. The present currency was introduced on the 7th of October 1983 (1st Muh'arram 1404).

The Maldivian Rufiya is divided into 100 Laari, which comes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50. The Maldivian Rufiya was first introduced on the 5th of September 1948 (1st Dh'ul Qaidha 1367), then with denominations of 1/2, 2, 5 and 10.

According to recorded history, the earliest form of currency used in the Republic was the cowry shell. This was exported to India, Africa and other places as a medium of exchange for imports. A coin were first minted during the late 16th century in the name of Dhigu Laari, made of silver and was the length of a finger. This coin was introduced by Sultan Al-Ghazee Mohammed Thakurufaanu (1573 - 88).

The exchange rate for US Dollar at the time of writing is MRf.12.72 for the dollar. The US Dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. Payments in the resorts and hotels can be made in most hard currency in cash, travellers’ cheques or credit cards. Commonly used credit cards are American Express, Visa, Master Card, Diners Club, JCB and Euro Card.
