Kuttanad

Kuttanad is known as rice storage place of Kerala or ' rice bowl of Kerala'. To see this region you can get into a boat to Changanacherry (2 1/2 hours) from Alappuzha. Its route passes through Kuttanad. This area is unique in the world where farming is done below sea level. For the major period of the year, most of the lands remain under water. During the rains, water rises to submerge most of the farm area and at other times the farm is deliberately flooded in a controlled manner to facilitate rice farming. During the rains the top soil and minerals from the highlands are washed away and deposited here making this area highly fertile.
