With its flourishing textile industry, shopping in Ahmedabad often centers on textiles. The city is a favorite destination for women and their prize catch is the exclusive sarees. Next on line are the handicrafts and the city is known to dish out exclusive craft works. Different type of men’s and women’s wear, bedspreads and curtains complete the shopping cart.
The native tie 'n die clothes, popularly known as ‘bandhni’, should not be skipped. This traditional hand embroidered clothes can be found in almost all the garment shops including the wayside shops. Be prepared for a bargain session, if you plan to buy ‘bandhni’ from roadside shops. When in Ahmedabad make sure not to skip the ‘Zari’ embroidery, as the city has a reputed tradition for this particular embroidery. The colorful ghagra-cholis, a traditional wear, is another unique wear in the city’s long list of traditional wears.
The city has a long association with khadi, cotton cloth made in India, primarily due to the Sabarmati Ashram and the Khadi movement initiated by Mahatma Gandhi.
Ratan Pole and Manek Chowk are the two important markets in the city. They are situated near the Lal Darwaja. C G road is an ideal place to hunt for cotton clothes. For ghagra-cholis, ‘bandhni’ and other traditional wears the best place is Law Garden. Numerous wayside shops are located in Law Garden. Ashram Road is another spot with several emporiums. Apart from this, there are numerous shopping malls offering items at cheap rate.
