Nagda History

Nagda is located at a distance of 23 kms away from the lake city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Originally known as Nagadhara, this city was also the capital of Mewar at one point of time. King Janmenjaya is said to be the founder of this ancient city that is known for its beautiful temples today. The royal house of Mewar ruled over Nagda for seven generations after which the city constantly changed hands. In the period between 1222 AD and 1229 AD, Nagda was plundered by a Muslim invader named Altamash who almost razed it to the ground. From the 10th century onwards, the rulers of Nagda started building many temples in and around the city. Many of them are in ruins now, though the most prominent ones have managed to survive.
