About Rishikesh
Located at an altitude of 1360 feet above sea level, Rishikesh is the holy site where Lord Vishnu slayed the evil rakshasa (demon) Madhu. It is also the gateway of the 'char dham' or the four holiest Hindu pilgrimage destinations - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Within the town you can use cycle-rickshaws or auto-rickshaws. Boats ferry you across the river. Rented cars are all chauffeur driven and self-driven vehicles are not available for hire.
By Air : The closest airport is the Jolly Grant in Dehradun (35 km from Haridwar).
By Rail : Though Rishikesh is connected by rail, the connection is only to Haidwar (24 km from Rishikesh). However Haridwar is well connected by rail to all major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta.
By Road : Haridwar is the closest bus connection to cities and towns in north India like Kullu, Manali, Shimla and Dehradun. From Haridwar you can take a train or another bus ro Rishikesh.
