About Lucknow
Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. This city is also known as the city of Nawabs, where nawabs mean the ancient rulers of this city. This city is famous for the way guests are treated and for the courteous behavior of its people. Lucknow, was formerly named Avadh or Oudh, it was the centre of the Nawabs. The city lies near the Gompti River. Most of the historical monuments are located in the north-western part of the old city. Contemporary Lucknow is a far cry from the elegance and class of the old Awadh; now, the city is very much a reflection of modern India with unplanned development, crowded streets and polluted air. But the discerning traveller can still glimpse of the aura of those heady days in the old monuments, ruins and inner city lanes and alleyways.
